What is the Registry?
The Windows Registry is a database containing all the information about the operating system and installed applications. The Registry stores information about things like mail preferences, what image is used for desktop wallpaper, and thousands of other little details.
Each time a new application is installed, information about the application is written to the Registry. Windows reads these Registry entries each time the application is used. To accommodate the new entries, the Registry database gradually grows in size.
By design, the Registry does not shrink in size when an application is uninstalled.
Instead, the Registry leaves a blank entry where a program reference once existed. Blank entries create fragmentation of the Registry, causing the operating system to take longer to find information. Occasionally, these blank entries cause Windows to crash.
