My friend sent me a link to download a movie from BitTorrent but I can't get the link to work. What do I have to do to download movies from BitTorrent?
BitTorrent downloads, usually simply referred to as Torrents are generally presented as an address to a file. The link you got from your friend was probably for something that ends with .torrent at the end. That .torrent link is a reference that tells you where to connect up to a torrent tracking server to locate the actual file referenced by the torrent. In order to make the link work, you need a BitTorrent client software application that knows how to handle the .torrent link. It sounds a little confusing, but it's really not so bad once you get things setup. There are a few simple steps you need to follow and you'll be watching that movie in no time.
There are literally dozens of software applications capable of downloading BitTorrent files. To keep things simple, I'll walk you through how to use the very straightforward uTorrent application.
The first thing you need to do is download uTorrent and install it.
One thing you need to be sure to do is add an exception for uTorrent in your Windows Firewall or other firewall software. This option is checked by default for Windows Firewall during installation, but if you don't create an exception, you won't be able to download files effectively.
You might want to uncheck all the boxes for the Ask.com toolbar, because it's not necessary to run uTorrent. After you install uTorrent, you will see a configuration screen for testing your connection. In most cases you can simply opt to Use Selected Settings. If you run into problems later, you can view this screen again by going to Options > Speed Guide on the menu.
At this point you're ready to paste in the URL your friend sent you. Click on the icon in the top left that looks like the world with a + sign. Paste the URL in the box that pops up and click OK to start downloading. You will be prompted for the location to save your download on the next screen. You can accept the default location to get started immediately.
Once you complete your download, you will need to make sure you have the proper video codecs installed to watch the movie you downloaded. Here's some tips on how to play torrent files if you get stuck.
